Planning Your Visit
What age are the sessions for?
Our weekday sessions (Wednesdays & Fridays) are lovingly designed for children up to 7 years old. To allow the whole family to play together, our monthly weekend sessions welcome older siblings with an extended age range for children up to 10 years old.
What should my child (and I!) wear in autumn/winter?
This is our most important question! The right clothes are the difference between a magical adventure and a miserable one, and we are passionate about making sure everyone is comfortable. Don't worry if you're new to this - it's simple once you know the secret!
The Golden Rule: Layers are your best friend! Lots of thin layers are far warmer than one thick one. They work by trapping air, which is a brilliant insulator. It also means you can easily remove a layer if you get too warm from all the exploring.
Here is the simple, foolproof layering system we recommend, especially for autumn and winter:
1. The Base Layer (Next to the skin) This layer’s job is to keep you dry by wicking away moisture.
-
What to wear: A long-sleeved top and leggings. Thermal sets or merino wool are fantastic, but any non-cotton top will do.
-
Top Tip: Try to avoid cotton for this layer. Cotton absorbs sweat and rain and stays wet, which will make your child cold very quickly.
2. The Mid Layer (The cosy, insulating layer) This is your warm layer. Its job is to trap body heat.
-
What to wear: A fleece jumper, a warm hoodie, or a woolly jumper. On the bottom, fleece-lined or thick jogging trousers are perfect. You can even double up with two mid-layers on very cold days.
3. The Outer Layer (The wind and water shield) This is your weatherproof shell. It keeps the wind and rain out, and all the warmth in.
-
What to wear: A waterproof jacket and waterproof trousers, or (our favourite for little ones) an all-in-one puddle suit. This is the most important part of the kit!
Happy Feet = Happy Child! (A Note on Wellies)
Keeping feet warm is a game-changer. Standard, unlined rubber wellies are great for summer, but in the cold, they are like wearing chilly boxes on your feet and will lead to tears.
-
For Winter, we STRONGLY recommend neoprene (like wetsuit material) or fleece-lined thermal wellies. They make a huge difference and will keep toes toasty for the whole session.
-
If you only have standard rubber wellies, please make sure your child wears two pairs of thick, warm socks (wool or thermal socks are much better than cotton).
Don't Forget the Extras!
-
A warm hat is essential.
-
Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens.
-
A scarf or neck warmer (a 'snood').
-
Always bring spare socks and gloves! These are often the first things to get wet.
A Quick Note for the Grown-Ups: Remember, you'll be standing still more than your little explorer! The same rules apply to you – layer up, wear warm, waterproof shoes, and you'll have a much better time.
And what about dressing for the spring/summer?
Summer in the woods is truly magical, and our woodland has a superpower: the trees!
Our beautiful, dense tree canopy creates a cool, dappled shelter, making our sessions the perfect escape during a summer heatwave. It also provides fantastic cover from any passing showers! Our philosophy is to embrace the joy of the season, and we believe happy children are often messy children!
Comfort is Key Light, comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting messy is the way to go. We still find that long, light trousers and long-sleeved t-shirts are best to keep arms and legs comfortable while exploring amongst the trees and kneeling on the woodland floor.
Embracing the Mud & Water! On hot, sunny days, waterproofs are often far too warm for playing in. We wholeheartedly encourage getting stuck into the mud kitchen and the water run, so instead of waterproofs, we simply recommend you pack a change of clothes for the journey home. Let them play freely, and worry about the clean-up later!
On cooler or predictably rainy summer days, waterproof dungarees or a rainsuit as a top layer is a good idea.
Happy Feet Closed-toe shoes like trainers or wellies are essential to protect feet on uneven ground. Please, no sandals or open-toed shoes.
What do we need to bring?
Just yourselves and your sense of adventure! You may wish to bring a drink and a snack for your child, as all that exploring is thirsty work. Please note, there are no bins on site. We kindly ask that you are prepared to take everything you bring away with you, including food wrappers and used nappies.
Where exactly are you located?
Our sessions are held in a beautiful private woodland in Acresford, near Swadlincote in the heart of the national forest. The exact location and directions are provided in your booking confirmation email. You can also find visual directions on our instagram page under the "Location" highlight.
About the sessions
What happens if it’s raining?
We run in all weathers! Rain brings the best puddles for splashing and makes the mud kitchen extra squidgy. We embrace the elements and find the magic in every season. The only time we would cancel a session is in the case of exceptionally high winds or thunderstorms, which would make the woodland unsafe. In this rare event, we will contact you directly to reschedule.
Do I need to stay with my child?
Yes, all our sessions are designed for you to stay and play together. Parents and carers are responsible for the children in their care at all times. It's a wonderful opportunity to connect with your child and watch their imagination run wild.
What if my child is shy or doesn't want to join in an activity?
That is absolutely fine! Our sessions are completely child-led. There is no pressure to join in with any specific activity. Children are free to watch, wander, and explore at their own pace. Sometimes, the greatest adventures are the quiet ones, and we encourage every child to follow their own curiosity.
Are you open all year round?
Almost! We run our sessions in all weathers, believing there's wonder to be found in every season. We do, however, close for a winter break in mid-December. We then remain closed through January to let the woodland rest and to prepare for another magical year. We look forward to welcoming you back from early February!
Are you a forest school?
No, Little Wildlings is not a formal Forest School. We are a nature-based stay-and-play group with a focus on unstructured, imaginative, and sensory fun for young children and their grown-ups.
While Forest School is a specific long-term programme led by a qualified practitioner, our sessions are more informal. We offer a magical, pressure-free space for families to explore the woods at their own pace, connect with each other, and simply enjoy the freedom of playing outdoors. We share the same core belief in the incredible benefits of nature connection, but we do it through a relaxed, play-focused approach.
Booking
Do I have to book in advance?
Yes. To keep our groups small and ensure a magical experience for everyone, booking is essential and must be made via our online booking site, here.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans can change, especially with little ones! Tickets are non-refunadable however, you are welcome to transfer your ticket up to 48 hours before the start of your session. To do this, simply log into your account on our Bookwhen booking site where you can manage your booking and select a new date.
All transfers are subject to availability. We are unable to offer transfers for cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice.
Please note that our discounted monthly block bookings are non-transferable. The discount for these tickets is based on your commitment to the full block of sessions for the month. Regretfully, we cannot offer credit, refunds, or alternative dates for any missed sessions within your block booking.
If We Need to Cancel a Session
The safety of our families is our top priority. On very rare occasions (such as dangerously high winds), we may need to cancel a session. If this happens, we will contact all affected ticket holders directly to arrange rescheduling your session for a future date.
When are new session dates released?
Our sessions are released on a monthly basis and tend to book up quickly. Dates for the upcoming month typically open around the middle of the current month. For instance, spaces for all of October's sessions will become available in mid-September.
To make sure you don't miss out, we highly recommend signing up for our newsletter. Our subscribers are always the first to be notified about new booking dates and any special events we have planned, giving you the best chance to secure your preferred dates. We also post updates on our social media, so be sure to give us a follow!
Facilities
Are there toilets available?
There is a toilet located near the main entrance behind the food catering van, however it can be quite a walk back from our main play area once the session is underway. For little ones who are caught short mid-adventure, 'wild wees' are a very normal and accepted part of the outdoor experience. It's all about embracing the freedom and reality of being in nature!
Can we buy food or drinks on site?
Yes! Hot food and drinks can be purchased from Harper's, the food catering van located at the main entrance.
